Our sources

Rent agreement stamp duty is set out in each state's own Stamp Act schedule. The state registration portals implement that schedule. Those are the only two sources worth trusting, and they are what we work from.

What each page tells you

Every state page names the Act and the article the duty is charged under, links to the government portal, and shows the date the figure was last checked and against what. Where a rate has not been confirmed against a primary source, the page carries a visible warning rather than presenting a guess as settled.

Why other sites contradict each other

Search for the duty on a Bengaluru rent agreement and you will find a percentage of rent, a percentage of rent and deposit, a flat two hundred rupees, and a capped five hundred, all published in the same year with equal confidence. Most of those pages copy each other rather than the Act. That is the problem this site exists to solve.

Corrections

If you have paid duty recently and the figure here did not match what the vendor or the sub-registrar charged, write to us with the state and the amount. Corrections supported by a receipt or a portal screenshot are applied quickly, and the verification date on the page is updated.
